The Department was incorporated in 1980 with John Angst as the first Fire Chief. He was followed by Chiefs Kenny
Sartous, Clare Hubley, Peter Raniowski, Francis Sanders,Sandy MacPherson and our present chief Chris Cody.
The main purpose of starting the department was the need for fire protection in the community and to provide
firefighting resources to the three major industrial facilities in the area: Michelin Tires Canada, Kimberly-Clarke Pulp
and Paper Mill, and the former Canso Chemicals.
The department had humble beginnings in 1980, the first fire apparatus was a 1958 Chevrolet truck, purchased from
the Wellington fire dept., here in Nova Scotia. We then purchased an equipment truck shortly thereafter.
